It was, as the term "Golden Era" indicated, a greatest-hits album, its 12 cuts including all nine of The Mamas & The Papas' chart singles up to that time: the gold-selling chart-topper 4/5().

The front cover sported a picture of the group from the photo session from their 2nd album, while the back cover featured 4/5(5).

With no new album ready at that point, and the group taking a break, the inventive title FAREWELL TO THE FIRST GOLDEN ERA alluded to what the group had accomplished up to that point, including 6 Top 5 singles and 3 Top 4 albums.4/5(5).

  8. But this wasn't just the first golden era, it was the only one, and with a lone Top 40 hit (a cover of Rodgers & Hart 's "Glad to Be Unhappy") left and one half-hearted album (The Papas & the Mamas, April ) to come before the group's breakup, this really was farewell.
